Interchange

“Interchange,” also known as “Interchanged,” is a remarkable abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas created in 1955 by the Dutch-American artist Willem de Kooning (1904–1997). Originally acquired by the artist himself in 1955 for a sum of $4,000, this masterpiece later found its way into the ownership of the David Geffen Foundation. In a momentous transaction that occurred in September 2015, Kenneth C. Griffin acquired the painting for a staggering $300 million, a sum that propelled it to the forefront of the most expensive paintings ever sold.

For a period, “Interchange” found itself under the guardianship of the Art Institute of Chicago on loan, where it garnered attention and admiration. Presently, it stands as the second most valuable painting globally, a position it holds only beneath Leonardo da Vinci’s illustrious “Salvator Mundi.” The latter painting achieved unparalleled acclaim when it fetched a remarkable $450.3 million during a momentous sale in November 2017.
